Terry McHugh
Terry McHugh (born 22 August 1963 in Clonmel, Co Tipperary) is a retired Irish javelin thrower, who finished tenth at the 1993 World Championships and seventh at the 1994 European Championships. He qualified for four Summer Olympics – 1998 Seoul (22nd), 1992 Barcelona (27th), 1996 Atlanta (29th) & 2000 Sydney (20th). He won 21 consecutive national titles from 1984 to 2004. [1]
His personal best was 82.75 metres, achieved in August 2000 in London. It is still an Irish Record.
McHugh also competed in two Winter Olympics – 1992 Albertsville (32nd in Bobsleigh Men's Two) & 1998 Nagano (27th in Bobsleigh Men's Two & 30th in Bobsleigh Men's Four).
He has remained close friends with his bobsleigh team mate and former champion discus thrower Garry Power (whose family come from Dungarvan, Co. Waterford), and who now teaches at a school in the UK. McHugh lives in Switzerland with his wife Daniela (former Swiss 400m runner) and son. He recently returned to Ireland for the burial of Power's father for whom he was a pall-bearer.
He is the second Irish sportsperson, after sailor David Wilkins, to compete at five Olympics.
