Terry Smith (businessman)

Terence 'Terry' Smith, New Zealand Order of Merit (born 15 May 1953, London, England) is a businessman, was the chief executive of Tullett Prebon and is the founder and chief executive of Fundsmith.

Early life

Smith grew up in East London where he attended Stratford Grammar School. He read history at University College Cardiff in 1974, graduating with a First.[1] He then worked for Barclays Bank until 1983, and obtained an MBA from The Management College, Henley.

Smith became a stockbroker with W Greenwell & Co in 1984 and was the top-rated bank analyst in London from 1984 to 1989. In 1990 he was appointed Head of UK Company Research at UBS Phillips & Drew, a position from which he was dismissed in 1992 following the publication of a best-selling book ‘Accounting for Growth’.

Collins Stewart and Tullett Prebon

Terry Smith joined Collins Stewart in 1992, becoming a director in 1996. In 2000, he became Chief Executive led a management buy-out of the company, which was floated on the London Stock Exchange that year. In 2003, Collins Stewart acquired Tullett Liberty, and then in 2004 acquired Prebon Group. Collins Stewart and Tullett Prebon were demerged in December 2006.[2]

Fundsmith

In 2010 Smith set up a new business, Fundsmith, a fund management company headquartered in London.[3] The business has one equity strategy and the Fundsmith Equity Fund is the main vehicle for Smith’s own equity investments. At launch it is reported that he invested £25 million of his own money.[4]

Other Interests

In 2008, Smith and others initiated an international campaign to erect a permanent statue of Sir Keith Park on the Fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square, in recognition of his work as commander of No. 11 Group during the Battle of Britain.[5][6][7] Due to this campaign, Smith was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit "for services to New Zealand-United Kingdom relations" in the New Zealand 2012 New Year’s Honours List.

Terry Smith is a regular media contributor, and has written for a number of outlets, and appeared on BBC's Newsnight. He also writes a blog, 'Terry Smith Straight Talking'.
