TheLiberal.ie
TheLiberal.ie is an online news publication and new media consortium based in Ireland. Owned by the Locksher Group,[1] it was launched in January 2014 and founded by Irish media entrepreneur Leo Sherlock. In 2016, TheLiberal.ie will launch Pretty.ie,[2] a women-focused website.
Concept and content
TheLiberal.ie was founded out of a need to represent news and commentary independent of the mainstream media in Ireland, on topics that were previously not covered in depth or with balance.[3] The publication takes its name from the principles of classical liberalism, with an emphasis on personal autonomy and limiting the power of the State. The site features original news articles, political analysis and op-eds on national and international current events, as well as an interactive platform for reader discussions, often on contentious topics.[4]
Reception
Since its launch, TheLiberal.ie has become nationally recognized[5] and gained a steady readership, with over 262,000 subscribers on social media and 1.5 million unique readers monthly. It has been cross-referenced and listed in several national media outlets, including Irish Central.[6]
Awards and nominations
In March 2015, TheLiberal.ie was nominated for the Best Startup award by the Irish SME Awards.[7]
