The Ark (Korean: 디아크, stylized as THE ARK or TheArk) is a five-member South Korean girl group under the management of Music K Entertainment. The group consists of Jeon Minju, Yuna Kim, Yujin, Halla and Jane.[1] Their name and logo were inspired by the famous French heroine Joan of Arc.[2] Their debut single, The Light (빛), was released on April 10, 2015.

History

Pre-debut

Before its debut as a group, various members of The Ark had experience in the entertainment industry. Two members released singles and performed as solo artists. Three members previously appeared on popular TV reality and variety shows.

Minju was an contestant on SBS's Kpop Star Season 2, a TV survival reality competition where Minju and four other show contestants formed the group 'YouU'. The group YouU advanced to the top eight position of the competition. Minju debuted with "Good bye Rain" (비별). The song features her group mate Yuna Kim and Bromance's Hyunkyu.[3]

Yuna Kim, born in New York, was a trainee at YG entertainment before leaving to join The Ark.[4] She made her first appearance in 2011 as a contestant on MNET's TV talent show series Superstar K3.[5] She gained notoriety as a rapper on the show, and later on became a trainee of YG Entertainment. Yuna Kim left YG Entertainment to pursue her studies in the United States. She had her solo debut under her current company, with the song "Without you now" (이젠 너 없이도) that featured MFTBY.[6]

Jane participated in "The Voice Kids" in 2013 and teamed up with Yoon Sang to perform BoA's "No.1".[7]

Member Halla starred in fellow label mate Trot Singer Hong Jinyoung's music video for "Cheer Up" which was released in November 2014.

2015: Debut with The Light

The Ark released "The Light" on April 10 and held their debut stage on the 12th at SBS's The Music Trend.[8] The Ark's first digital single album, "Somebody 4 Life", was released along with a music video of the track "The Light", which starred actress Jo Min Soo and member Halla. The music video tells the story of a mother (Jo Min Soo) whose daughter (Halla) is tragically killed in an automobile accident and how the mother learns to grieve her daughter and ultimately find peace.[9]There are rumours that they disbanded but their company didn't say anything about.
