The Biscuit Factory is a Contemporary art gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne. The Gallery opened in 2002 after undergoing major renovation work. It is the largest commercial art, craft & design gallery in the UK.[1]
Prior to 2002 the Building was used in the manufacturing of biscuits (hence the name The biscuit factory), changing its name over the years from The Tyne Biscuit Factory to the name Newcastle upon Tyne Biscuit Manufacturers. The building has also been used for many other uses such as a warehouse in 1946 to a carpet and furniture retailer in 1977.
The Art Gallery
The Biscuit Factory was opened in 2002 as an independent commercial art gallery. The gallery houses a number of contemporary art exhibitions throughout the year representing a huge range of work such as paintings, glass, ceramics, original prints, jewellery, textiles and furniture. In 2012 SHOP was introduced housing local designer maker wares, cards and gifts.
The gallery's home is a former Victorian warehouse, constructed in 1870,[2] which contains original features such as brickwork and exposed beams. There are over two floors of exhibition space and two floors of artist studios. Open seven days a week and receiving over 50,000 visitors each year The Biscuit Factory is a great platform for showcasing North East artists alongside artists of national or international recognition.
There is also a cafe 'The Factory Kitchen' and an a la carte restaurant 'artisan' with a kitchen headed by North East Chef of the year winner Andrew Wilkinson.
Additionally The Biscuit Factory is available for private hire and hosts events from weddings to corporate functions. Autumn 2014 will see the opening of another extension to the business The Biscuit Room - a state of the art, creatively designed function suite for up to 300 guests.
