Wild Bunch sold the international rights of the film The Dancer, about the legendary dancer Isadora Duncan and her rival Loie Fuller.[4] Stéphanie Di Giusto would make her feature film directing debut, while Elle Fanning was previously attached to star.[4] Di Giusto, Thomas Bidegain and Sarah Thiebaud wrote the script, while Alain Attal would produce the film through Les Productions du Trésor, along with Les Films du Fleuve, Wild Bunch, and Sirena Film.[3]

Principal photography on the film began on September 28, 2015, and wrapped up on December 10, 2015.[3][5]
