The Dark Side is a film in development from 20th Century Fox and Steve Zaillian's Film Rites based on The Dark Side novel by Anthony O'Neill.

Plot

As stated by Deadline, the film is "an elevated sci-fi noir story set in a future where the moon is used as a penal colony. It houses criminals, psychopaths and curious tourists alike. When an anarchic android begins wreaking havoc on the area and bodies start turning up, an exiled detective arrives to investigate."[1] The film "is being planned as something along the lines of iconic sci-fi adventures like Avatar and Blade Runner."[2]

Background

Author Anthony O'Neill wrote The Dark Side and presented it at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2014. O'Neill's other books have included Scheherazade, The Lamplighter, The Empire of Eternity and The Unscratchables.[3] Dark Side was received well with "positive buzz".[4] A scout from 20th Century Fox was given an advance preview of the work at the book fair, and the studio made a first look deal with O'Neill to acquire the rights for a film adaptation. Garrett Basch and Steve Zaillian of Film Rites are set to produce the film.[5] Simon & Schuster also purchased the rights to publish the book for release in 2015.[6] The film's plot has been compared to Westworld, the 1973 science fiction western-thriller film.[7]

Development

As of early November, 2014, a screenwriter for the film had not yet been announced.[2]
