The Deadly Tower of Monsters is a top-down shooter video game developed by ACE Team and published by Atlus for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 4, released on 19 January 2016.

Plot

The game follows three famous actors as they experience sci-fi movie setting adventures.[1] It is inspired by classic sci-fi movies.[2]

The game's framing device is that of an early 1970s B-movie The Deadly Tower Of Monsters recently released on DVD, with the director's commentary of its in-universe director Dan Smith serving as a combination of tutorial and meta-commentary on the game, providing an explanation as to why many default elements of shooters would be in what is ostensibly a film (the player being required to break boxes to obtain items, for example, is taken as the lead actor ad-libbing on Smith's advice to make sure every moment was somewhat exciting). The film itself is a space opera in which astronaut Dick Starspeed (played in universe by actor Jonathan Digby) being shot down on an alien planet ruled by a tyrannical emperor.

Development

The game was first announced on June 12, 2015.[3] A new trailer was released on 2 Dec 2015.[4]

Gameplay

It is a top-down shooter with twin-stick controls and melee combat elements. A jetpack can also be used to reach high areas.[5]

Release

It was released on Steam on 19 January 2016.[1]

Reception

It has received mostly positive reviews. It has a score of 73% on Metacritic.[6] Destructoid awarded it a score of 8 out of 10, saying "The Deadly Tower of Monsters is a fleeting experience, but one that no B-movie fan should go without."[5] PlayStation Lifestyle awarded it 7.5 out of 10, saying "Just like the movies it tries to emulate, the game is so bad with its special effects, dialogue, and set-pieces that’s it’s rather good."[7] Hardcore Gamer awarded it a 4 out of 5 saying "Minor issues aside, The Deadly Tower of Monsters is a pleasant surprise indeed and a particularly impressive budget action game showcasing a lot of creativity. "[8] PC Invasion was more critical, awarding it 6 out of 10 and saying "The Deadly Tower of Monsters is not the tightest 3D hack-and-blast arcade homage you’ll ever play, but it is the only one to feature puppies dressed as deadly hoovers, amazing stop-motion dinosaurs, and set design to rival Forbidden Planet."[9] Only Single Player awarded it a score of 8.4 out of 10, saying "Overall, this game is definitely a great pick for any sci-fi fan, providing a highly accessible and entertaining gameplay experience packed with plenty of humor and parody."[10] Brash Games awarded it 9 out of 10, calling it "a lot of love in a single package, giving gaming and movie fans plenty of reason for more than one showing."[11]
