Plot

The BITTER HARVEST story centers around Yuri (Max Irons), an artistic soul born into a family of Cherkashyna Holodny Yar Cossacks living on a countryside family farm on the rural outskirts of Smila, who struggles to win the approval of his grandfather, Ivan Kochanuik (Stamp), and father Yaroslav Kochanuik ( Barry Pepper), and the heart of Natalka (Samantha Barks). Their lives are changed forever with the invasion of the Red Army and the subsequent persecution of his family and fellow countrymen as Joseph Stalin's regime of red communist terror extends across Ukraine and Eastern Europe.

Production

Canadian Promiminent businessman Mr.Ian Ihnatowycz and Richard Bachynsky Hoover (Ukraine) act as the Executive Producers with fellow Canadian Chad Barger acting as producer.

On October 16, 2013 Aneurin Barnard joined the cast of the film as Mykola, along side stars Samantha Barks as Naatalka and Max Irons as Yuri who in the film portrays the young artistic talented only son of a Cossack (Kozak) family hopeful of a career and studies in the famous Kiev art Academy during the communist Soviet 1932 farm and industrial collectivization growing up in rural Smila central Cherkasy oblast (region) Ukraine.[2] The film covers the Holodomor, a man-made famine that killed millions of Ukrainians. Producer Ian Ihnatowycz stated, "Given the importance of what happened, and that few outside Ukraine knew about it because it had been covered up, the story of this genocide needed to be told. It's relevant today. [...] It's ironic that before we even finished our film we had yet another example of Russia's aggression against Ukraine."[3]

The cast also includes Tamer Hassan, Lucy Brown, Jack Hollington and Tom Austen.[4]

Filming

Filming was underway in Ukraine by November 15, 2013.[5] On February 5, 2014 Variety reported that the shoot had just wrapped in Kiev.[1] In early 2014, post-production continued at London's Pinewood Studios, using the official James Bond filming tank for under-water filming. Skyfall editor Stuart Baird and SFX teams worked on the film in post production.
