"The Egg" is a short story by American writer Andy Weir, originally published on his website, galactanet.com. It is Weir's most popular story, and has been translated into over 30 languages by readers.[1] In 2012, it was adapted into a short film by Sam Meacock, starring Harrison Lee and Philip Hope.[2]

Summary

The story is written about the main character, who is "you", and God, who is "me". The main character, a 48-year-old man who dies in a traffic collision, meets God, who tells him that he has been reincarnated many times before, and that he is next to be reincarnated as a Chinese peasant girl in 540 AD. God then explains that he is in fact constantly reincarnated across time, and that all human beings who have ever lived and will ever live are incarnations of the main character. God explains that in fact there are other Godlike beings like him elsewhere, and that he too will one day become a God. The entire universe was created as an egg for the main character, and once he has lived every human life ever, he will be born as a God.
