The Fogcutters

The Fogcutters are a 20-piece big band based in Portland, Maine, led by Brian Graham and John Maclaine. The Fogcutters feature a "traditional" big band set up but are not traditional in style. They are just as comfortable playing hard rock, hip-hop and funk as paying tribute to big band legends such as Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway.[1]

History

The band formed in 2009 after putting together a supposed one-night show of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald classics at The Empire Dine & Dance in Portland, Maine. The Fogcutters moved towards incorporating original and local music, regardless of genre culminating in the now annual "Big Band Syndrome" event held at The State Theatre (Portland, Maine). The concept of Big Band Syndrome is taking original songs written by local musicians and re-arranging them for big band then performing the songs with the artists.[2] Big Band Syndrome has now become a staple in Maine music scene and has featured Maine artists such as The Mallett Brothers Band, Lady Zen, Spose, Dominic Lavoie, Darien Brahams, Jacob Augustine, Kyle Gervais, Dan Capaldi (Sea Level, The Cambiata), Spencer Albee(Rustic Overtones, Spencer & The School Spirit Mafia), Dave Gutter (Rustic Overtones, Paranoid Social Club), Eyenine, Anna Lombard (Anna & The Diggs, Gypsy Tailwind), Lyle Divinsky, and Adam Waxman.[3]

The Fogcutters have released two albums to date including "Big Band Syndrome Vol. 1, Live at The State Theatre"[3] and a Christmas EP entitled "Jingle These Bells" which offers The Fogcutters take on classic Christmas Carols.[4]

Since 2010, The Fogcutters have shared the stage with many notable musicians including creating big band arrangements of Blues Traveler and Spin Doctors songs performed with John Popper and Chris Barron.[5][6]
