The Founder is an upcoming American biographical film directed by John Lee Hancock and written by Robert Siegel. The film portrays the story of Ray Kroc and his acquisition of the McDonald's fast food chain. The film stars Michael Keaton as Kroc and Laura Dern as his wife Ethel Fleming. The additional cast includes Nick Offerman, John Carroll Lynch, Patrick Wilson, Ric Reitz and Wilbur Fitzgerald. The film is scheduled to be released on August 5, 2016.

Premise

Chronicling the rise of McDonald's fast food empire, The Founder tells the true story of how Illinois salesman Ray Kroc met brothers Mac and Dick McDonald, operating a hamburger restaurant in southern California in the 1950s. Kroc subtly maneuvers himself into a position to take control of their company, which grows into one of the world's best-known brands after he buys the chain for $2.7 million in 1961.

Production

The screenplay for The Founder was written by Robert Siegel. According to sources, the film will be developed in the same vein as There Will Be Blood and The Social Network. According to Deadline.com, it was ranked the 13th best unproduced script of 2014.[3][4] In December 2014, John Lee Hancock was signed to direct the picture.[5]

Casting

In February 2015, Michael Keaton was signed for the role of Ray Kroc.[6] Laura Dern joined the film on May 11, 2015 to play Kroc's wife, Ethel Fleming, from whom Kroc divorced in 1961.[2]

Filming

Principal photography on the film began in Newnan, Georgia on June 1, 2015.[7][8] An old style McDonald's set with the Golden Arches was constructed in downtown Douglasville, Georgia in June 2015 for the filming.[9]

Release

On March 2, 2015, The Weinstein Company paid $7 million for the film's distribution rights.[10] On March 26, 2015, The Founder was set for a November 25, 2016 release by The Weinstein Company.[11] In March 2016, the film was pushed up to August 5, 2016.[12]
