The John Carroll School, established in 1964, is a private, independent, college-preparatory, co-educational Catholic school for grades 9–12, located on 87 acres (350,000 m2) in Bel Air, Maryland, USA, about 30 minutes' drive north of Baltimore, Maryland in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore.
The school is named after John Theodore Carroll, SJ, the first Catholic bishop and archbishop in the United States—serving as the ordinary of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore.
History
In the early 1960s Cardinal Lawrence Shehan decided to build an Archdiocesan Catholic high school on an 87-acre (350,000 m2) site in Bel Air, Harford County. The John Carroll School opened to 202 freshmen on September 9, 1964 under the leadership of Principal Rev. Raymond Wanner. From its earliest days the school was run by clergy, religious, and laity. Over 670 students in grades 9–12 attend the school. John Carroll draws students from the Baltimore metropolitan area, especially Harford, Baltimore and Cecil Counties, as well as southern Pennsylvania.

Instilling Catholic values through a challenging college preparatory program, we educate the whole person: spiritually, intellectually, physically, and socially. Our secondary school community develops young men and women of moral integrity and prepares them to serve responsibly in shaping a more just and compassionate global society.

Academics
John Carroll offers a college preparatory curriculum. In addition to general education, John Carroll teaches Catholic and democratic principles and gives consistent attention to Catholic moral and religious training.
The John Carroll curriculum includes four full years of English, Mathematics, and Religious Studies; three years of a Foreign Language, Social Studies, and Science; two semesters of fine art electives; and one semester each of physical education and health. Seniors are also required to complete a senior project. John Carroll offers 17 different AP courses in addition to college preparatory and honors courses. John Carroll students can choose between Spanish, French, German, and Chinese. In addition to these course requirements, John Carroll students must participate in annual retreats, attend junior college counseling, and accumulate over 60 hours of community service.
John Carroll's has an International Student Program, run by a Coordinator (Sandi Seiler as of 2013). The program comprises approximately 8-10% of John Carroll’s total student body with students coming from Canada, China, Cameroon, Germany, Italy, Nigeria, Spain and South Korea. These international students are integral members of the John Carroll community taking classes side by side with other students. All female students live with host families, many of whom have children attending John Carroll. Male students may choose to live on campus at the newly remodeled St. Joseph Hall or with individual host families. Chinese students attending John Carroll are accepted through partnership with the Cambridge Institute for International Education.[4]
John Carroll students participate in various exchanges and trips with sister schools and ACIS - Educational Tours.[5] Destination of these exchanges and trips include China, Costa Rica, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Russia, and Spain. John Carroll has also participated in a cultural exchange with La Salle High School,[6] a Catholic high school located in Hakodate, Japan involving over 300 students. John Carroll regularly holds cultural fairs sponsored by the Culture Shock Club.
Recognition
In 1994 John Carroll was one of the private schools nationwide to be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.
In 2009, the school newspaper The Patriot launched its online edition,[1] and won two national awards in its first year: a 2010 Silver Crown from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and a 2010 Pacemaker Finalist recognition from the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA). In 2011, the online newspaper received a Gold Crown from the CSPA. The print edition was named a 2010 Pacemaker Finalist by the NSPA in addition to winning the George H. Gallup Award from the Quill and Scroll International Society for High School Journalists. The Patriot received a Silver Crown from the CSPA in 2013. In 2014, The Patriot was named the Best Overall Publication by Baltimore Student Media and won a Crown Award from the CSPA in the hybrid publication category. The school offers an extensive summer camps program[8] and an Academy of Performing Arts & Dance.[9]

- Zach Thornton, former goalie for Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer.
- Drew Westervelt, class of 2003. All-time leading scorer in men's lacrosse for UMBC. Drafted 4th overall in the 2007 Major League Lacrosse draft by the Denver Outlaws. Also plays for the Philadelphia Wings in the National Lacrosse League.
