The Lightbox
The Lightbox is an award-winning public gallery and museum located in Woking, Surrey, in the South East of England. Three stunning galleries host a huge range of exhibitions, changing regularly and it has a free museum of local history - 'Woking's Story'. It was opened on 14 September 2007 and it houses a locally focused Heritage Collection, The Ingram Collection of Modern British Art and the Miss Joan Hurst Collection.
Overview
Located in the centre of Woking on the banks of the Basingstoke Canal, The Lightbox was built to provide quality arts and heritage services to the local region and beyond. The project began in 1993 when a group of local volunteers decided to try and establish a cultural centre in the Woking area.[1][2] Following a fundraising campaign the contemporary building was designed by Marks Barfield Architects who also designed the London Eye and it opened in September 2007.
In 2008 it won the Art Fund Prize Museum of the Year award, the most prestigious accolade in the sector, and it has gone on to achieve awards in Accessibility, Customer Service, Volunteering, and in 2016 it was awarded a Green Tourism silver award.[3] The Lightbox holds charitable status and is part-funded by Woking Borough Council, and it has received support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Arts Council.
The Lightbox hosts around 20 temporary exhibitions per year, the majority of which are devised in-house. It presents regular exhibitions of The Ingram Collection of Modern British and Contemporary Art, owned by local entrepreneur Chris Ingram. It is also much more than just a gallery, with a programme that includes talks, tours, comedy nights, Pop Up restaurants and a very active learning and engagement programme which offers arts and crafts workshops for people of all backgrounds and ages.
