The Mummy is an upcoming American action-adventure fantasy film directed by Alex Kurtzman and written by Jon Spaihts. It is a reboot of The Mummy franchise[1] and the second installment of the rebooted Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe. The film stars Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Marwan Kenzari, Courtney B. Vance and Russell Crowe. The film will be released on June 9, 2017.

Plot Synopsis

Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.[2]

Production

On April 4, 2012, Universal Studios announced that they are developing the reboot of The Mummy franchise, with Jon Spaihts to write the film and Sean Daniel who produced the previous three films, returning as producer.[11] On May 1, 2012, Universal has signed on with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman a two-year deal to produce the reboot through their K/O Paper Products banner.[12] On September 24, 2012, it was announced that Universal had set Len Wiseman to direct the film.[13] In December 2012, it was being said that The Mummy reboot will be different from the classic trilogy, it'll be a completely new take on the mythology, and it will be set in present day.[14] On February 14, 2013, Universal set The Hunger Games writer Billy Ray to write a competitive draft for reboot against Spaihts' written script.[15] On July 31, 2013, Wiseman left the project due of scheduling conflicts.[16] On September 13, 2013, news reported that Mama director Andrés Muschietti was in talks to direct the film.[1] In October 2013, Orci spoke to IGN, hinting that both The Mummy and Van Helsing reboots will have a shared universe.[17] On May 6, 2014, Muschetti left the film due to creative differences, while Spaihts wrote the latest draft of the script, which reimagined The Mummy franchise in modern day with new characters not seen in previous iterations and a protagonist imbued with a human personality.[18]

On July 16, 2014, Universal announced that they had tapped Kurtzman and Chris Morgan to develop all classic film monsters which include Frankenstein's monster, Count Dracula, The Wolf Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein, and The Mummy.[19] The first film they will develop together will be The Mummy, for which they had begun the meetings.[19] On July 30, Kurtzman was set to direct the film.[20] In mid-October 2015, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the new Mummy film might be based on a female character.[21] On November 24, 2015, Tom Cruise was reportedly in talks to play the lead role in the film as a special forces soldier.[4][7] On December 8, 2015, THR reported that Sofia Boutella was in talks to sign on to play the titular role in the film, which confirmed previous news about a female protagonist.[5] In January 2016, it was confirmed that Cruise and Boutella had officially signed on to star in the film.[3] On March 8, 2016, Annabelle Wallis was cast in the film to play an archaeologist,[6] and following her Jake Johnson also joined the cast of the film to play a military soldier, the role was specifically written for him.[7] On March 14, Marwan Kenzari was also cast in the film for an unspecified role.[8] On April 15, 2016, Courtney B. Vance was cast in an unspecified role.[9] On May 4, 2016, Deadline.com, THR and Variety reported that Russell Crowe was in talks for the role of Dr. Henry Jekyll after Javier Bardem, Eddie Redmayne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy were considered.[22][23][24]

Principal photography on the film began on April 3, 2016 in Oxford, United Kingdom.[25][26]

Release

Universal Pictures will release the film on June 9, 2017, after moving down from the previously scheduled March 24, 2017.[3] Before that the film was also scheduled for several dates like April 22, 2016 and then June 24, 2016, when Universal announced the April 22 for The Huntsman: Winter's War.[27][28]
