The Visitation (in Hungarian: Vizitáció) is an icon of anonymous Hungarian painter master MS from 1506.[1][2]

Description

The work's dimensions are 140 × 94.5 cm.

The icon is part of the collection of the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest.[1]

Analysis

The icon is one of the most famous works in the medieval Hungarian art. It presents the meeting of the pregnant with John the Baptist, St. Elisabeth, and Virgin Mary. All the natural elements that are depicted are in praise of the Lord. This idyll, however, is just an illusion - the bare rocks, twisted trees, beautiful and delicate flowers - iris, peony, strawberries in the foreground, are subtle symbols of passion. Elizabeth makes homage to the Virgin Mary to show her devotion slightly raises her left hand to kiss her. The icon is part of the Church of St. Catherine, Banská Štiavnica Slovakia. Other icons from the altar of the church are kept in Lille (France), St. Anton (Slovakia) and Esztergom (Hungary). The inscription on the icon identified with the icon of an altar dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Krakow. It is assumed that MS is Martin Schwartz.[1]
