The Walt Disney Company Argentina S.A. is an Argentine media company headquartered in Olivos, Argentina.[2][4][5] It is owned by The Walt Disney Company through Disney Enterprises, Inc.[6][7]

History

The company was founded on July 7, 1990 by Francisco Javier Irarrazaval Alfonso (then responsible for Disney's consumer products and licenses)[8] and Jorge Otamendi.[1] Disney Argentina was the first subsidiary of Disney in Latin America.[8]

In 2000, Buena Vista Film Productions (Latin America) S.A. partnered with Telefónica Media and Artear to operate Patagonik Film Group (each company with 30% of the capital).[5][9][10]

In 2001, the company took over the operations of Buena Vista Columbia Tristar Films of Argentina S.A., Buena Vista Film Productions (Latin America) S.A. and The Walt Disney Studios (Latin America) S.A.[6]

In 2007, Disney and Artear acquired the shares of Telefónica Media in Patagonia Film Group and later sold those shares to Cinecolor and Pol-ka.[11]

In early 2007, Jamaican businessman Maxim Emile St. Patrick Higgins (Max Higgins) released a project to build a Disney theme park (called Walt Disney Mundo) in the city of San Pedro;[12] however, on October 23, Disney denied his involvement in the project.[13][14][15] Subsequently, Higgins was sued by Disney Argentina for violation of the Trademark Act of Argentina.[16][17] Previously, Higgins had cases in the United Kingdom and the United States for repeated scams.[18] In June 2013, the case was prescribed.[19][20]

In November 2013, some media reported that the National Communications Commission (CNC) had granted Disney Argentina a license to provide telecommunications services (as a phone operator and internet provider),[21][22][23] but it was clarified that the company was registered on the RAMATEL (part of the CNC) to commercialize the video game Disney Infinity.[24]
