The Writer with No Hands is a 2014 documentary feature film and accompanying book which follows a British academic as he attempts to prove that Hollywood screenwriter Gary Devore was the victim of a CIA-orchestrated forced disappearance in 1997.[1]

Film

The documentary premiered at Hot Docs in April 2014 and won the Tablet of Honor at the 2014 Ammar Popular Film Festival.[2] It scored 7.2 out of ten from 146 votes on IMDB and consensus held that the mystery elements of the film were "compelling" and "intriguing". D Magazine included the film in its top ten at the Dallas Videofest.[3]

More contentious was the way the story was told, with some publications calling its unconventional approach "as beguiling as the mystery it is trying to solve", and others calling it a "sour" and "dubious" product "that borders on unethical" [4] Cinestyle summarised: "I wouldn’t want to be [director] Westaway’s friend (or enemy!)... This documentary is riveting".[5]

Book

In 2016, an eponymous book by Matthew Alford, the film's presenter, was published April 1st on Amazon Print on demand and Kindle.
