Thirunellayi of Palakkad, Kerala, in South India, is a small Brahmin village in the banks of the Kannadi River puzha (nila). It is 4 km from Palakkad. Accessibility to this remote and cultural village is through buses and auto rickshaws. Thirunellai is a small village mainly inhabited by Brahmins or Iyers who have migrated from Thanjavur, 2 or 3 centuries before. This village consists of 150 houses arranged in a manner that each house (in every lane) is built in such a way that each one supports the other in a linear fashion. This way the houses are arranged either sides of the road.
Festivals
The main festivals are an annual 'Rathotsavam' or chariot/car festival and 'Sasthapreeethi'. Rathotsavam is celebrated each year in the Indian summer month of May or late April, or the second week of Tamil month of Vaikasi, (Uthram, Chithirai Masam). Rathotsavam is celebrated period of 10 days from the day of 'Dhwajaraohanam' till the last day 'Aarrattu'. 9th day is the main day, The 'Rathayathra'. Rathaprayanam of Swami Ayyappan and Chakrathazhvaar are the attractions of Ratholsavam, with an atmosphere of purity and pilgrimage.The cultural beauty here is a great piece of attraction. Sasthapreeethi is celebrated usually by the end of December or the beginning of January. Mahanavami and Vijayadhashami are also celebrated here and Uriyadi on the vijayadhashami day is a notable event.
