Thothae (Thai: ท้อแท้) is a subdistrict in the Wat Bot District of Phitsanulok Province, Thailand.
Name origin
The word thothae means tired, weary, downhearted or dejected. It is formed from the two elements, tho (Thai: ท้อ) meaning discourage, and thae (Thai: แท้) meaning real or genuine.
According to local legend, the village is located very far from another villages, and the distance can make travellers very tired.[1][2]
Despite the negative meaning, Thothae people did not change the village name, only the Buddhist temple Wat Thothae (Thai: วัดท้อแท้) in Thothae renamed to Wat Thong Thae temple (Thai: วัดทองแท้; lit.: real golden temple).[2]
Geography
Thothae lies within the Nan Basin, which is part of the Chao Phraya Watershed.
Administration
The subdistrict is subdivided into 8 smaller divisions called (muban), which roughly correspond to the villages within Thothae. There are 6 villages, two of which occupies multiple muban.[3] Thothae is administrated by a Tambon administrative organization (TAO). The muban in Thotae are enumerated as follows: [4]

ตำบลท้อแท้ มีตำนานกล่าวขานสืบต่อหลายชั่วอายุคน ว่าในอดีตการเดินทางแสนลำบาก ทางบกใช้เดินด้วยเท้าดีที่สุด คือขี่ม้านั่งเกวียน ทางน้ำใช้เรือพายตามลำน้ำ กาลครั้งหนึ่งเจ้าเมืองพิษณุโลก จะเดินทางไปที่บ้านท่าสาวงามโดยทางเรือ ตามลำน้ำน่านแบบพายเรือทวนกระแสน้ำ การเดินทางเป็นไปด้วยความยากลำบาก จนเกิดความท้อแท้เบื่อหน่าย ข้าวปลาอาหารที่นำไปก็เกิดบูดเน่าจึงได้หยุดพัก ท้องถิ่นที่หยุดพักให้ชื่อหมู่บ้านตำบลท้อแท้ คำท้อแท้มีคนรุ่นใหม่เห็นว่าไม่ไพเราะ พยายามเปลี่ยนใหม่แต่ชาวบ้านไม่ยินยอม จึงคงเปลี่ยนเฉพาะชื่อวัด จากวัดท้อแท้เป็นวัดทองแท้
