Tian Tao (Chinese: 田涛; pinyin: Tián Tāo; born 8 April 1994) is a Chinese weightlifter. He was picked for the sport in Changyang at ten years of age.[1]
Career
Tian first rose to national prominence after winning the 77 kg category of the Chinese Intercity Games in October 2011 at the age of 17.[2] Although not recognized for not being an international event, his lifts far exceeded the official Youth World Records (by 6/23/35 kg respectively),[3] the jerk of 205 kg even beating the Junior World Record by 3 kg.[4]
Tian's next competition was the April 2012 National Championships where he attempted to qualify for the London Olympic Games. With his total of 365 kg he was however beaten by Lu Haojie and Lu Xiaojun to third place and didn't make the national team.[5] During his second attempt in the jerk with 211 kg he also injured his right elbow and had to rehab for the rest of the year.[6]
In 2013 he moved up to the 85 kg class and competed in January at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival, winning the bronze medal.[7] In the March National Championships he won the snatch with 165 kg but had to retire early again due to injury after only one successful jerk, not placing on the overall podium.[8] Later this year in September at the domestically prestigious Chinese National Games he placed third with only two good attempts.[9] He was nevertheless chosen to represent China at the World Championships, where he was forced to drop out after the snatch part of the competition.[10]
Tian's international breakthrough came in 2014. After winning his first national title in April by 7 kg,[11] he was picked for the Asian Games in September and World Championships in November. At the Incheon Games in South Korea he beat the favorite Kianoush Rostami by one kilogram for gold, while setting a new clean and jerk Junior world record with 218 kg for a 381 kg total.[12] The WWC in Almaty two months later however saw a higher level of competition and he only finished sixth overall with 375 kg, failing his last jerk attempt for Gold and a new clean and jerk world record.[13]
At the 2015 World Championships Tian took gold in the snatch with a 178kg lift, but bombed out in the clean and jerk, failing three times to jerk 211kg.[14] At the 2016 Chinese National Championships, he lifted 175kg in the snatch and 220kg in the clean and jerk for a 395kg total, unofficially breaking the world records for clean and jerk and total.[15]
