Tidal Handicap

The Tidal Handicap was an American Thoroughbred horse race contested on turf at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. Run in early July, the Grade II event was open to horses aged three and older.

The third of Belmont Park's four major summer grass races for older horses, the unofficial series began with the Red Smith Handicap (G-2) in early June, followed by the Bowling Green Handicap (G-1) in mid June, and finished with the Sword Dancer Handicap (G-1) at the end of July.

Previously, the Tidal Handicap had been run at Aqueduct Racetrack.

The Tidal Stakes for three-year-olds was run at the old Sheepshead Bay Race Track for almost thirty years from the 1880s through until the track closed in 1910. According to a 1901 report on the race by the New York Times, the Tidal Stakes was one of the famous fixtures of the Sheepshead Bay Spring meeting.
