Location
Tidewater School in Eliot, Maine is situated on the southern Maine-seacoast New Hampshire border, an hour from Boston to the south and the White Mountains to the north. Portsmouth, New Hampshire is the closest city. Close to Interstate 95, the school sits on former farmland with nearly 3 acres (12,000 m2). Faculty, board and parents have renovated a farm building and two modular donated buildings into classrooms.
Curriculum and programs
Tidewater School offers the Waldorf school curriculum for preschool and elementary grades.[1] This includes a week-long farm visit in Grade 3.[2]
Governance and faculty
Waldorf schools are not-for-profits, governed by a Board of Trustees who oversee the legal and financial business aspects and a faculty of Waldorf trained teachers and administrators who oversee the day-to-day operations and pedagogy. Currently Tidewater has ten class teachers and assistants, and certain specialty teachers (Spanish, German, Handwork).
Due to budgetary restraints, Tidewater no longer has an administrator nor the following specialty teachers: movement, strings, woodworking.
Tidewater School offers limited tuition assistance to families based on financial need. The difference between tuition and cost is made up through fund-raising, volunteerism and scholarship donations.[3] A special diversity scholarship initiative was established in 2005.[4]
