Timeless is jazz guitarist John Abercrombie's debut studio album as leader. The album was recorded on June 21-22, 1974 and released in 1975 via ECM label.[4]
Overview
Abercrombie has said: "The original intent was to do something that reflected my origins, playing with organ groups in the late 60's". The album was recorded with Jack DeJohnette on drums and Jan Hammer on Hammond organ.
In 2004, Black Milk sampled Timeless for the Slum Village track "Reunion (ft. J Dilla)" on the album Detroit Deli.
In 2011, Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer used samples of Timeless for the track "Retimeless" on the remix album Re:ECM.
Reception
The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 4½ stars calling it "Thought-provoking and occasionally exciting music that generally defies categorization".[1] The Penguin Guide to Jazz awarded the album 4 stars noting "There's more filigree than flash on the early Timeless and it's left to DeJohnette and the underrated Hammer to give the set the propulsion it calls for... this is a session that has grown in stature with familiarity, an altogether tougher and more resilient label debut than anyone remembers".[2] The Rolling Stone Jazz Record Guide said "Hammer especially plays with astounding fire and grace on this session, some of the finest organ playing he's recorded".[3]
