Tissa Central College or Tissa Vidyalaya,[1] located in Kalutara, Sri Lanka, is a national school considered to be the first Buddhist English School in Kalutara North.[1]
History
The school was founded by Proctor H. A. de Abrew,[2] and opened on 5 November 1936. The first principal appointed to the school was W. S. De Zoysa.[3] The first two teachers at the school were Kusuma Abeywickrama and R. P. Jayawardana.[3]
In the school's early days, De Abrew organized the Kalutara North Buddhist Education Board to support school activities. The other board members were V. L. Wijemanne, W. K. Wijemanne, Robert de Silva, W. Perera, H. S. Fernando and W. A. de Silva. De Abrew worked as the Chairman.
The school was taken over by the Government on 31 June 1945, amongst 54 other schools,[4] under the Central College concept of the Hon. C.W.W. Kannangara.

Battle of the Mangosteen
The annual cricket encounter between Tissa Central College and Kalutara Vidyalaya, known as the "Battle of the Mangosteen",[11] has been held since 1949. It is the second-oldest battle between the two leading Buddhist schools in Sri Lanka and the 11th-oldest school cricket encounter in Sri Lanka. Of the 58 matches played Kalutara Vidyalaya has won 22, Tissa Central has won seven, and 29 matches have been drawn. In 2016 Tissa completed a comfortable 125 run victory at the Panadura Public Ground.[12]
