Anthony Terrell Smith (born March 3, 1966), better known by his stage name Tone Lōc or Tone-Lōc /ˈtn ˈlk/, is an American rapper and actor.

Early life and career

Smith was born in Los Angeles, California, the son of Margaret, who managed a retirement home, and James Smith.[1]

He is known for his deep, gravelly voice and his million-selling hit singles, "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina".[2]

Tone Lōc is also a voice actor, having voiced characters in several cartoon series. He voiced the character of "The Goanna" in the 1992 movie FernGully: The Last Rainforest.[3] He also voiced Fud Wrapper, the host of the animatronic show Food Rocks, which played at Epcot from 1994 to 2004. In this latter role, he sang the song "Always Read the Wrapper", a parody of his own song "Funky Cold Medina". His song "Ace Is In The House" features in the films Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) and Ace Ventura Jr: Pet Detective (2009).

He provided vocals for FeFe Dobson for a track called "Rock It 'Til You Drop It" on her first album, 2003's Fefe Dobson.

Personal life

Legal issues

In December 2010, Lōc was arrested for DUI. He was released on bail claiming a medical condition had caused a seizure.[4]

On June 18, 2011, Tone Lōc was arrested for felony domestic violence and possession of a Colt AR-15 Sporter rifle (restricted by California law)[5] after an altercation with the mother of his child.[6] He was released less than three hours later after posting $50,000 bail.[7][8] On October 3, 2011, he entered a plea of no contest to both charges, and was sentenced to one day in county jail, three years of probation, 52 weeks of anger management counseling and 30 days of community service.[9]

Health problems

On May 29, 2009, Lōc was rushed to a Florida hospital after collapsing during a concert. The rapper had cut his elbow when he fell, and was released the same day.[10]

On October 15, 2011, Lōc was hospitalized for exhaustion after collapsing on stage during a concert in Atlanta. He was taken to a local hospital where he was rehydrated via IV.[11]

On March 16, 2013, Lōc collapsed on stage at a performance at the Bridge Bash in Des Moines, Iowa.[12]

On December 6, 2013, Lōc collapsed on stage during a performance in San Francisco.
