"Top of the World" is a song by Nigerian Afrobeat recording artist D'banj. The song serves as the fifth single from the album D'Kings Men (2013), a collaboration between members of D'banj's label DB Records. It is the first single to be released through Sony Music’s RCA Africa label and DB Records Nigeria since D’Banj signed his groundbreaking multi-album deal with Sony Music Entertainment Africa.[1][2][3] The song was the official SuperSport anthem for the 2013 African Nations Cup. It peaked at number 10 on Pulse's Music Video Charts Nigeria.[4] It also peaked at number 4 on Afribiz's Top 100 music chart.[5]

Music video

The visuals for "Top of the World" highlights the Super Eagles 2013 African Cup of Nations tournament run. Moreover, it shows clips of the Kokomaster's performance at the closing ceremony of the aforementioned tournament, which took place at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.[6] According to OkayAfrica, "the clip features D’banj singing the song into a forest of mics while performing alongside a dreadlocked guitarist and rock drummer" [7] D'banj dedicated the song and music video to the Super Eagles who coincidentally won the aforementioned cup after their 19-year drought.[8][9] The music video was directed by Godfather Productions and shot in South Africa.[10]

Critical reception

Upon its release, the song received positive reviews from music critics and consumers. Charles Mgbolu of Vanguard said: "It's a song from the soul; cementing D’banj stronger to a world audience; it’s a single that tells his dramatic story and now ecstatic fans can watch the video." [11] Bellanaija added: "D’banj is clearly on “Top of the World“! Bangalee proves he is truly a force of nature in the African music scene." [12]

Monty Entertainment also added: "One of the things I love about D’Banj now is that he switched things up. If you listen to the songs he has released recently, you will notice that they are different from the D’banj we knew when he was still under Mo’Hits Records. D’Banj even displayed his vocal skills on this new track, and for a guy like him, it was not bad at all. Not only do you get to enjoy this tune, the song actually sends out a message." [13]
