Transdev Wellington is a future operator of Wellington's Metlink rail network, that will be operated by Transdev Australasia in partnership with Hyundai Rotem, after being awarded the contract to operate and maintain the commuter rail system in December 2015 by the Greater Wellington Regional Council. The contract is to commence on 1 July 2016.[1][2] It will take over from KiwiRail division Tranz Metro.
Background
The Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) put the contract for the operation of Wellington's metropolitan commuter rail services out to tender in 2015. Bids were received from a Keolis Downer/Kiwi Rail joint venture, Serco and a Transdev Australasia/Hyundai Rotem joint venture. In December 2015, the Transdev Australasia/Hyundai Rotem joint venture was announced as the preferred bidder.[1]
The contract will run for nine years starting on 1 July 2016.[2] The contract has two three-year extensions, taking its potential total length to 15 years. Extensions are subject to the achievement of performance targets including on-time performance and customer satisfaction.[2] GWRC stated that the contract is to provide savings to ratepayers of around $100m over the 15 years.[2]
Operations
Most of Tranz Metro's 400 operational staff will be re-employed by Transdev Wellington.[3]
Most rolling stock used on the Wellington suburban network is owned by the GWRC and leased to the current operator. The fleet includes (as of March 2016) 64 FP/FT "Matangi" class electric multiple units, and 24 SW/SE class carriages and a single AG class baggage/generator van for the non-electrified Wairarapa Connection services. It is likely Transdev will lease from KiwiRail the DFB class diesel-electric locomotives required to haul the Wairarapa Connection services, as was previously done by Transdev Auckland for the SA/SD carriage sets.
