Transgariep
The Transgariep is an area of South Africa. Its name derives from the point that it was on the other bank of the Orange River, also known as the Gariep River to the Cape Colony. A similar naming convention placed the moniker Transvaal on territory to the east of the Transgariep. The area is mostly desert. Originally populated by Nama people, it saw populations of Oorlam and Dutch enter from the mid eighteenth century onwards. The name is seldom used and it is doubtful if any of the current inhabitants would recognize it.
