Transit Visa (novel)

Transit is a novel set in 1942, by Anna Seghers.[1][2]

The protagonist travels from Paris, after the German invasion, to unoccupied Marseilles. The visas and paperwork to flee become a matter of life and death, however, the main character who assumes the identities along with the paperwork of two other men, Weidel and Seidler, is almost completely uninterested in leaving Marseille and only uses his hard-to-come-by papers as an excuse to stay.[3][4]
