Transmission Service Request
In the wholesale segment of the electric utility industry, a Transmission Service Request, is a request for the right to use a specific amount of the electric power grid transmission capability to deliver power from one location to another on the grid. The North American Electric Reliability Corporation defines Transmission Service in their Glossary of Terms Used in NERC Reliability Standards (pdf) as "Services provided to the Transmission Customer by the Transmission Service Provider to move energy from a Point of Receipt to a Point of Delivery."
In effect, transmission services are those services that allow for delivery of energy. However, transmission services do not include the actual delivery. Delivery is accomplished through an energy schedule. A schedule to deliver typically requires a transmission service reservation as evidence of ability to delivery.
NERC Reliability Standards and NAESB Business Practices Standards for the Wholesale Electric Quadrant ("WEQ") define the reliable use of transmission service in North America and the business practices associated with the procurement and use of the same.
