Tripuraneni Maharadhi (20 April 1930 - 23 December 2011) was an Indian Telugu film, screenplay, dialogue and script writer, considered legendary by the film industry for his work in Telugu cinema. He is also remembered for his political forays, as well as for the film Alluri Seetharama Raju.[1][2] his screenplay was par excellence and considered legendary in the 70's and 80's as he pioneered novel methods of creative screenplay writing. He was also the de facto director of most of the films for which he wrote. He was also a poet and playwright with political vision. He has also authored several books with political vision and acumen.
He worked as a radio announcer, journalist, dubbing writer and many similar roles. Later he met N.T.R on the sets of the film 'mana desam'. After which Maharadhi started penning straight films in Telugu wherein he penned above 150 scripts with 95% hit ratio. (He was very choosy with scripts as he believed in quality than quantity). He also jointly produced a few films with Tamil Nadu ex-cm M.Karunanidhi wherein M.Karunanidhi penned in Tamil while Maharadhi penned in Telugu.
Maharadhi was born to a landlord family with the common family name of Tripuraneni Balgangadhar Rao in Pasumarru, Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh India. Maharadhi was a legend in his own right though not as popular as our pan India N.T.R or Y.S.R, but behind the screens he was a silent volcanic influence in many areas of Andhra politics and Telugu Filmdom. He is best remembered in the political stream as the pioneer of the idea of a regional party in A.P, and who was instrumental in the launch of Telugudesam Party along with Late N.T.R .
Role in politics
Maharadhi is to some degree, linked to every political party in the Telugu political frame and was instrumental in the launch of the TDP. He was the first person to come up with the idea of a regional party in A.P after which he started a campaign namely 'Telugu Tejam' as prospective title for a regional party, it consisted a 16-point agenda which included the famous phrase "Teluguvalla Atma Gauravam" which later N.T.R used to a great extent to promote T.D.P'S political vision. Maharadhi vehemently proposed Telugu tejam to fill the then existing political vacuum and also to establish a political identity for Telugu people (ref : Marosaari maranisthunna NTR and NTR punarudhhanam) later a few intellectuals joined this crusade and soon it attracted many visionaries into this movement. Maharadhi along with the few intellectuals decided that a sanmohana shakthi is required to counter the charishma of Indira Gandhi, hence in that process N.T.R was finally convinced to join the initiative wherein he took over the reins and finally Telugu Tejam was named as Telugu desam to fight the next electoral battle. With able support from all corners Telugu Desam Party came to power with a thumping majority with just nine months of extensive campaigning. After this rest is history....N.T.R became chief minister and later Maharadhi parted ways politically with N.T.R on the issue of inclusion of congressional blood. N.T.R was favouring the inclusion of few ex-congress leaders under the leadership of Nadendla Bhaskar Rao but Maharadhi was completely against this idea. Maharadhi told NTR " Nadendla bhaskar rao oka visha purugu (poisonous insect), meeke esaru pedthaadu". Maharadhi felt that the inclusion of congressional blood will spoil the purity of T.D.P's political vision. ,Later it happened that Nadendla Bhaskar rao tried a coup on NTR'S cabinet when N.T.R was away, but Nara Chandrababu Naidu saved the day for N.T.R through his political acumen and skill by actuating an M.L.A march to the Governor in order to display the strength of M.L.A'S in N.T.R's favour. N.T.R and Maharadhi were close childhood friends though they had political differences. N.T.R accepted this fact with Maharadhi in his last days wherein Maharadhi and Akkineni Nageshwar rao were the only full-time visitors for N.T.R in his final days. .
Maharadhi also served as Andhra Pradesh Congress State Secretary when Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy was Andhra Pradesh Congress president. In this position, he was instrumental in promoting YSR in the east and west Godavari districts in Y.S Rajashekars Reddy's early days. When the Bharatiya Janata Party came into existence, he served briefly as a National Council member wherein M.Venkaiah Naidu, Maharadhi and Naayini Narasimha Reddy were prominent speakers for B.J.P. In 2004, Maharadhi launched his own political party 'Trillinga Praja Praghati' (TPP) with the slogan 'Badugu vargaala rajyadhikaaram' (power to the weaker sections of the society). TPP was fielded in 2009 in 80 odd constituencies and it acquired a decent voteshare. Maharadhi is also an ardent supporter of the communist agenda as it was revealed in every walk of his life may it be films or politics. The revolutionary verve of communism was displayed in all his works and activities.
