USS New York (1776)
The USS New York (1776) was a gondola (also known as a Gundalow) built in 1776 at Skenesboro, New York. It was originally called the USS Success prior to launch for service in General Benedict Arnold's fleet on Lake Champlain in the Battle of Valcour Island. The American fleet had 8 gundalows, 4 row galleys,2 sloops, and 1 schooner. The British Fleet had: 1 square-rigged ship, 1 Ketch-radeau, 2 schooners, 1 gundalow and 28 gunboats.
During the battle, it was captained by Captain Lee,[1] During the battle, one of the three cannons exploded,[2][3] killing Lieutenant Thomas Rogers.[4]
The New York was the only gunboat to survive the battle,[4] along with 6 other gundalows,4 galleys, and 2 sloops. The New York was later stationed at Fort Ticonderoga and fell during the July 1777 siege.[4]
In 1910, the stem of the USS New York was unearthed and can be found at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Vergennes, Vermont.[4]
