Uday Sahay is a voluntarily retired officer of the Indian Police Service (IPS). He went on to work in a variety of communication, media and public relations positions in India. He is also edited a book on Indian news media and is a media commentator on the topic as well.[1]

Prior to retiring from the AGMU (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union Territories) I[2]PS, Sahay, an officer of 1988 batch, spent ten years in active policing. He then went on to work in media and communication management. During his career in the Indian civil service, besides holding assignments as Assistant Commissioner of Police, Deputy Commissioner of Police of two districts in Delhi and Superintendent of Police in Mizoram, he held a number of civilian posts, such as: Directorate of Information and Publicity of Delhi Government; Deputy Director General in Prasar Bharati; and Additional Director General (Communications) in the Organising Committee of Commonwealth Games in Delhi (till October 2010). He is Chairman and Managing Director of SAUV Communications Private Limited, as well as MD and CEO of another company, Bodhi Tree Life Learning Private Limited, both Delhi based.. In 2016, Sahay was elected as Secretary General of the Society for Social and Economic Development in Bihar and Jharkhand - one of the oldest Delhi based policy research organisations on Bihar and Jharkhand.

He edited the book Making News: Handbook of the Media in Contemporary India, published by Oxford University Press.[3] After its publication in September 2006, this book made it to the best-sellers list in non-fiction. As a photographer, he contributed 20 photos and also photo-edited a coffee table photography book entitled, Delhi: India in One City (2009), published by Academic Foundation. The text of this volume was edited by Malavika Singh.[4] In 2009 he authored, Media aur Jansamvad, with co-author Vartika Nanda, a noted journalist. More recently in 2013, he edited a coffee table book, Raj Bhavan of the Rising Arunachal Pradesh. [5]

He has also authored a number of articles for media journals and speaks on the media lecture circuit in Delhi.[6][7] Sahay has also organised a number of seminars and workshops on media issues in Delhi, Patna, Jaipur and Nainital. He was a key media consultant for Sheila Dikshit’s campaign for a third term in Delhi’s Assembly.[8] Sahay also held the position of the Chief Communication Adviser to the Global Bihar Summit. He was Communication Advisor to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and currently a Communication Consultant to Delhi integrated Multi-Modal Transport Systems Limited, and Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management.

Sahay has extensively trekked in Garhwal and Kumaon hills of the Himalayas. As Liaison Officer of the Government of India heading a group of pilgrims in the year 1997, he had the opportunity to trek to Kailash-Manasorovar. He used this experience to create a photography exhibition and talk series on Western Tibet and the Kailash–Manasarovar region. His photography of the region was exhibited at the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Gallery, New Delhi, in 1998; again in 1999 in collaboration with Himalayan Heritage Center at Dehradun; and additionally, in January 2001 in the “Kumbh Mela” at Allahabad, under the auspices of the India Heritage Research Foundation. The exhibition was repeated in Delhi at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) in 2003 and then in Hong Kong’s Visual Art Gallery. He made a film in 2003 titled ‘Himalayan Mystique: Kailash.'[9]

Awards

In January 2001, the Delhi Commission for Women honoured Sahay for his work done in partnership with the Commission. On April 2001, he was given an Award for Excellence in Public Service by the Non-governmental organization (NGO), ‘Awantika.' In 2006, he was conferred Radha Raman Award for excellence in media research. In 2009, the Public Relations Council of India gave him an award for PR Excellence in India. In July 2009, the Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting nominated him as Member of the Inter-Media Publicity Coordination Committee (IMPCC). In 2010, the Indian Institute of Learning & Advanced Development (INLEAD) nominated him as a Regent of the INLEAD Federation.[10] In 2010, he was nominated to the Board of Studies of University School of Mass Communication (USMC), Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University.
