University Institute of Technology RGPV, popularly known as UIT RGPV or UIT RGTU, is a public institution located in Bhopal, India. The institution was established by the government of Madhya Pradesh with the name Government Engineering College (GEC). It is an autonomous institution as of 2010.
History
To address the growing need for engineering expertise, the government of Madhya Pradesh created Government Engineering College (GEC) in 1986 in the state capital of Bhopal. The institute initially offered only Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Computer Science and Engineering and B.E. in Electronics and Communications Engineering. The institute has been renamed a few times by the government. When it was declared autonomous in 1988, the name was changed to Bhopal Engineering College. In 2002 it was made a part of Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyala (RGPV), technological university of the state of Madhya Pradesh; at that time the institute took its current name (UIT RGPV). The institute is again autonomous beginning with the 2010 session, having the autonomy to conduct and manage its exams and other academic affairs and not having to follow all university guidelines.
Campus layout and environment
The institution is situated near Gandhi Nagar, on the outskirts of Bhopal, about 3 km from the airport on the Gwalior bypass road. The campus is spread on a contiguous 325 acres. The campus has instructional blocks, a workshop, a library block and an administrative block. The campus has residential facilities for the staff and separate hostels for both girls and boys. The institution provides a healthy academic atmosphere and has large open spaces, playgrounds and academics parks. The large number of industries situated in and around Bhopal provides excellent training opportunities to the students and staff.
Management and faculty
UIT-RGPV is governed by the rules and regulations of RGPV university and its councils of governance and management. The Vice Chancellor of RGPV is the nominal head of all management committees of the institute. The Institute has academic autonomy and therefore has freedom to adopt its own scheme and syllabus. Freedom is available to the UIT-RGPV faculty to adopt a variety of students learning strategies and develop learning resources. RGPV controls the final certification of the students, though continuous assessment is managed by the faculty of UIT-RGPV.
UIT-RGPV teaching faculty forms an effective combination of experienced, well qualified and talented teachers. Most faculty members have done their Ph.D./M.E./M.Tech. from reputed institutions like IITs, NITs and university departments. Senior faculty members have held various government and non-government portfolios. Some have been eminent educationists and have contributed to leading international and national development agencies. The institution draws heavily on faculty expertise for planning, executing and monitoring diverse activities.
Admission procedure
Undergraduate
At the undergraduate level, admissions are determined on the basis of the Joint Entrance Examination entrance exam. The prerequisite for an entry into a B.E. program is 10+2 years of schooling or a Diploma (10+3). Diploma holders in engineering will enter B.E. courses by lateral entry, which gives them some credit for previous studies. Typically, a diploma holder student joins a four-year B.E. program in the second year of B.E.; thus the diploma student's years of education (10+3+3=16) are same as those for a non-diploma student (10+2+4=16).
Postgraduate
At the postgraduate level, the admissions to the Master of Engineering (M.E.) and Master of Technology (M.Tech.) programs are based on the GATE entrance exam. Students applying for the Master of Computer Applications (M.C.A.) program are selected according to their performance on the MP-MCA examination.
