The University of Central Florida Police Department (UCFPD) is the law enforcement agency of the University of Central Florida, a space-grant university located on a 1,415-acre (5.73 km2) main campus in Orlando, Florida, USA.[1] The UCFPD is a full-service police department responsible for the safety and security of students, faculty, staff, and visitors at the university’s campuses.[1]

History

Although the University of Central Florida was founded in 1963, and its first classes were held in 1968, the UCFPD was not founded until 1973.[1][2] Before 1973, the campus was patrolled by local municipal and county sheriff's office. Today, the university has partnership agreements with a number of neighboring police departments, including the Orlando Police Department, Orange County Sheriff's Office and Seminole County Sheriff's Office. These departments also provide auxiliary officers for high-attendance and high-risk events, such as events at the CFE Arena and Bright House Networks Stadium, as well as visits by dignitaries. Under Florida statute, university police officers are state law enforcement officers, and the department's jurisdiction includes all UCF property, and an area within 1,000 feet (300 m) of any university property or facilities.[3]

The current chief of police, Richard Beary, is the brother of former Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary, who earned a master's degree from UCF.

Organization

The University of Central Florida Police Department has five divisions, and also administers an emergency response team (ERT), K-9 units, and community service officers.[4]
