The University of Derby Students' Union (UDSU) is the representative organisation for students at the University of Derby, and is based within the Students' Union Quarter at the Kedleston Road site.
Its main bar and entertainments venue, the Academy, was opened in April 2006.[1] The venue has a capacity of 570[1] and has been host to artists including Girls Aloud, Pendulum, Scouting for Girls, Sugababes,[2] Zane Lowe,[2] Taio Cruz, Fun Lovin' Criminals and Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.
Student media at the University of Derby Students' Union include a monthly magazine, Dusted and Student Radio Station "d:one". The Students' Union also runs its own independent advice centre, called the Source.
Liberation campaigns
UDSU has four liberation campaigns made up of students are deemed a subdivision of peoples under-represented/oppressed in society. They are staffed by voluntary Part-Time Officers elected each year, who also sit on Union Council representing the members of their campaigns. The four Liberation Campaigns are: Black Students, Disabled Students, Women and the LGBT.
Previous operations
The Students' Union previously owned and operated a number of student venues in Derby. The Union's city centre venues were in desperate need of refurbishment. There was a £400,000 maintenance backlog on the buildings, all the old bar equipment and pumps needed replacing, for instance. If the union had continued to occupy the building they would have had to have done that maintenance work. Taking this into account the decision was made to close The Late Bar pub, Union One and Union Two clubs.[3] As well as these venues there was previously a bar located at the University's Lonsdale Hall halls of residence. With the closure of these locations, the Academy Bar is the only Students' Union owned entertainments venue.
Prior to the opening of the Academy Bar, the Students' Union operated a bar called The Union Arms [4] at the Kedleston Road Campus, whist the Richardson Hall (location of the new Academy bar) was used for concerts and events.
