The University of Guilan (Persian: دانشگاه گیلان) is an institute of higher education in Rasht, a large city bordering the Caspian Sea, in the province of Guilan, in northern Iran.
It has more than 17,000 students enrolled.
History
The university was established in 1974 as a collaborative effort between Iran and West Germany. It began with 170 students and 10 members of faculty, offering courses such as German Literature and Civil Engineering. The university offers degrees in 55 fields for Bachelors, 35 fields for Masters, and seven fields for PhD studies. It is the largest university in the province.
The institute has a department in Caspian studies.
The Caspain Journal of Environmental Sciences is published semi-annually as official publication of AUCRS (Association of Universities of Caspian Region States), which is published by University of Guilan, Iran. There are several other journals published in English or Persian by the university.
There is a wide range of courses offered in the faculties of Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Agriculture, Humanities, Physical Education, Natural Resources, and the College of Art and Architecture. More than 112 courses are on offer in 35 departments leading to B.Sc., B.Eng., M.Sc., B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees.
With more than 540 academic staff, eight faculties and three research centers, Guilan University is the largest academic institution in northern Iran.[2] There are nearly 17000 students in 112 fields of study, including undergraduate, postgraduate and research scholars. The university is spread over four campuses with a total area of more than 2.5 km2. The University of Guilan was founded in 1975 and started its academic activities two years later with 120 students in the departments of Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Agronomy, Animal Husbandry and German Literature.
