The University of Sargodha (Urdu: یونیورسٹی آف سرگودھا) is a public research university based in Sargodha, Punjab, Pakistan.

It was founded in 2002 by an ordinance of the Government of Pakistan. The university is composed of the central campus in Sargodha, and seven branch satellite campuses located in Faisalabad (Faisalabad Satellite Campus and Women Campus Faisalabad), Lahore, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Mianwali and Bhakkar. Its first acting chairman was Vice-Chancellor Riaz-ul-Haq Tariq.[1] Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sargodha, Dr. Muhammad Akram Chaudhary has been awarded best Vice-Chancellor of any university in Pakistan. The university has eight faculties and 137 programmes, of which 53 are for M.Phil. and Ph.D.. 400 educational institutions are affiliated to it.[2]

History

De'Montmorency College was established at Shahpur Sadr in 1929, Later it was renamed to Government College Sargodha, at Shahpur before independence. The college was shifted to Sargodha in 1946.

In 1987-88, postgraduate classes were introduced at the college in the disciplines of English, Urdu, mathematics, physics, chemistry, economics, Islamic studies, history.

In November 2002, college was renamed to the University of Sargodha. Riaz-ul-Haq Tariq was first Vice-Chancellor, acting from 2002 to 2007. Professor Dr. Muhammad Akram Chaudhary headed the university from February 2007 to 2011. Since 2011, Muhammad Ali was the acting Vice-Chancellor, but at present Muhammad Akram Chaudhary has returned to his duties as Vice-Chancellor of University of Sargodha.

Students of the University have published papers in international research journals. University research projects include cooking oil with increased shelf life and a patented project called ‘A Herbal Antioxidant System for Chewing Gum Stability’. The university has established an international-level medical diagnosis center, and introduced mineral water with the name of ‘Khus Aab’ (Persian for Pleasant Water), which it exports to Abu Dhabi.

A scientist at the university produced a new version of the Paracetamol tablet that is not as injurious to the liver, using the hepatoprotective effects of Rheum emodi roots and their aqueous and methanolic extracts.[4]

A student of pharmacy believed that 80% of all cardiac problems are due to old cooking oil. She developed a herbal formulation which has enhanced the shelf-life of oils to one calendar year, without any loss in nutritional attributes. A paper she wrote on the subject was published in an international journal, garnering wide acclaim.[5]

Two university students, https://www.facebook.com/roxkstarx and Farhat Batool, topped in athletics among all national universities. The university is one of only three centers in Pakistan for X-ray crystallography, and also harbors an Electron microscope, another rare find in the country.

Divisions of the university

The University of Sargodha maintains eight primary faculties, which include Agriculture, Social and Behavioural sciences, Islamic and Oriental learning, Management and Administrative sciences, Science, Technology, Healthcare sciences, Pharmacy, and Engineering.

University College of Engineering & Technology

UCET was established in 2013 with the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering. Later in 2014 the Department of Civil Engineering was started with accreditation by PEC.

Community Service programs

The university runs Campus Radio (FM) for public education. The university has several aid programs; university-level education is being delivered free of charge to orphaned students, and those students who have memorized the Qur'an, the Muslim Holy Scripture (around 880 such Huffaaz are studying in the university).

The University Medical and Diagnostic Centre and Model Pharmacy treats inhabitants from the region for nominal fees. Barring just four, all tests conducted at Pakistan's leading laboratories, those of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre and Aga Khan University, are also conducted at the University of Sargodha’s laboratory. Besides pharmacy counseling, standard medicines are available for cheaper rates to locals.
