The University of Saint Anthony (Dr. Santiago G. It started as St. Anthony Academy, a night high school for working students. In 1962, the academy which was housed in a rented private building in San Roque, Iriga City, Camarines Sur province, Philippines was transferred to San Miguel, its present site. On June 1973, it was elevated to the status of University.
To serve the educational needs of the people of Iriga City in particular and Bicol Region in general, the University of Saint Anthony offers the benefits of a formal education from nursery to post-graduate studies.
Inspired by its tribune ideals, the University of Saint Anthony aims to give its students the opportunity to develop their potentials for moral, social, spiritual, cultural and productive living in a democratic society that recognizes the intrinsic worth and dignity of an individual.
University Mission
To provide professional and technical training, specialized instruction in literature, philosophy, the science and arts and for the promotion of scientific and technological researches.
History
Since the University started as an academic institution in this side of the universe, much water has crossed its bridge of life.
The first University President, the University's Grand Old Man, the late Dr. Santiago G. Ortega, Sr. to whom the University is dedicated, it being the Dr. Santiago G. Ortega Memorial was installed the first University President. He made everything possible to make the school grow, gave his best time making the University what it is today… prestigious and domineering over other schools in the Rinconada area.
Atty. Santiago D. Ortega, Jr. succeeded him and was eventually installed second University President until today. A lawyer but very much involved academically, he has always considered the welfare of the students and employees making things work well for them.
Organized by a group of educators that called themselves Rinconada Educators Association, the first school was named St. Anthony's Academy and organized on August 18, 1947. It was a night high school and occupied a rented building with an enrolment of 131 students and an 8-man teaching and non-teaching staff. Most of the students were over-aged, having just emerged from the Second World War.
In 1959, the group disintegrated with some organizers proposing to sell the school. But Dr. Santiago G. Ortega, the President of the Board of Trustees and Director of the school, sought to strengthen the school instead and after a reorganization the school was named St. Anthony College. Then, it was already offering tertiary courses.
In 1961, courses leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Science in Education, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science in elementary Education, elementary Teachers Certificate in Home Economics, and Bachelor of Science in Economics were offered. In 1996, the College of Commerce, the School of Midwifery and Nursing were added to the growing academic offerings of the school. Later, in the same year, the School of Graduate Studies was started. And along came Criminology, Engineering and Architecture.
A source of pride of the University is its strong faculty line-up. These are men and women who are educationally prepared to handle their line of expertise. The University has also produced men and women of high educational caliber. Many teachers in the region and some occupying supervisory positions especially in the public schools are graduates of the University. Most of the graduates are gainfully employed. Many of its Nursing and Midwifery graduates are bringing dollar remittances contributing greatly to the economic development of the country.
With the University right in the heart of Iriga City, the ordinary Bicolano parents need not worry sending their children to Manila schools when USANT is right here. This pares them from a lot of worries. They are likewise spared from the thought that their children might get into undreamed activities like getting into bad company, taking prohibited drugs or pregnancy and early marriage and other temptations children are vulnerable to. In USANT where tuition and miscellaneous fees are affordable and if you are a parent, you can rest assured that your children will be able to finish college and that during their studies, they are with you safe at night.
