In July 2015, it was announced that former Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, along with their producer Andy Wilman, had agreed to make a new motoring TV series for Amazon Video. The initial agreement was for 36 episodes over three years,[1][2] scheduled to be released to Amazon Prime's online customers starting in late 2016. The intended format was for individual television films, using location shooting without television studio segments.[3][4] Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos described the deal as being "very, very, very expensive".[5] W. Chump & Sons is the production company for the programme.

There was speculation that the show could be called Gear Knobs after a trademark application was made for that name by an associated company,[6][7][8][9] but Clarkson stated in October 2015 that this would not be the title.[10][11] He explained in April 2016 that the word "Gear" could not be used for legal reasons.[12]

Filming

In October 2015 location shooting of a segment involving Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1, and Porsche 918 Spyder cars took place at Algarve International Circuit near Portimão, in Portugal.[13][14] In addition to filming by Clarkson, Hammond and May; automotive journalists Chris Harris, Tiff Needell and Marino Franchitti used the same cars to produce a segment for Chris Harris on Cars.[15]

In early December 2015 the team spent several days filming with Maserati Biturbo 430 cars around Le Havre, Honfleur, and the Port of Le Havre in northern France.[16] Two of the presenters had been unable to travel to the filming location.[17]

In February 2016 filming took place in Central London, and in Barbados.[18]

In April 2016 filming took place in Northern Africa, Germany and in Middle East whilst visiting places such as Amman and Marrakesh. This is according to Jeremy's Twitter page. [19]

Filming is being done with Arri Amira and Panasonic GH4 digital 4K resolution cameras, with Ben Joiner acting as Director of Photography.[20][21]

Promotion

A short trailer was released on 8 April 2016 portraying Clarkson, Hammond and May brainstorming for a suitable name for the new series, before ending with the Twitter hashtag #TheSTILLVeryMuchUntitledClarksonHammondMayAmazonPrimeShowComingAutumn2016.[22]

Another short trailer was posted by Clarkson on Facebook, yet again portraying the trio attempting to conjure up a suitable name. Albeit this time, they end up getting distracted and completely forgetting the task at hand. Shortly afterwards, the trailer was released on the Amazon Video UK YouTube channel.[23]
