V. Kumar (professor)

V. Kumar is the Regents Professor, Richard and Susan Lenny Distinguished Chair & Professor of Marketing, Chang Jiang Scholar,[1] Lee Kong Chian Fellow, ISBM Senior Fellow,[2] executive director for the Center for Excellence in Brand & Customer Management, and the Director of the Ph.D. Program in Marketing at the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University, Atlanta, USA. He has extensive experience, as a thought leader and a consultant, working on marketing research projects for companies such as IBM, Procter & Gamble, Polo Ralph Lauren, ICICI Bank, and AT&T, among many others.[3] He is an internationally renowned marketing scholar and has been recognized as a Legend in Marketing for his contributions as a lifetime researcher in marketing. His areas of interest include profitability analysis of customers and brands; forecasting techniques; retailing concepts at the customer, store, and market level; marketing strategy; international marketing; customer relationship management (CRM); marketing research topics; and business-to-business marketing. His pioneering work in the area of customer lifetime value (CLV) has earned him several awards and recognition, and has resulted in many scholarly publications. On July 1, 2014, he was named the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Marketing published by the American Marketing Association (AMA).[4]

Early life

Kumar was born in Chennai, India. His mother worked as a telephone operator and his father was a clerk in the Indian Railways. Both parents instilled in him the value of higher education and encouraged him to become an engineer. On their advice, he entered the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) of Kharagpur. After graduating with a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech), he continued his education in the M. Tech Program in Industrial Management at IIT-Madras. It was here where Kumar discovered his interest in Marketing. Motivated by his professor, he then moved to the United States to do research on Quantitative Marketing in the Ph.D. program in Marketing at the University of Texas at Austin.[5]

Publications

Kumar has published over 250 articles in leading academic journals including the Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, Journal of Marketing, Management Science, Marketing Science, Journal of Marketing Research, Operations Research, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Advertising Research, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Retailing, International Journal of Forecasting, International Journal of Research in Marketing, Journal of Direct Marketing, Marketing Letters, and the Journal of International Marketing as well as in the proceedings of many national conferences in the U.S and abroad. He has authored 15 books which have been published in 6 languages around the world.[6] His works have also been referred in numerous books and book chapters, research reports and case studies.

Kumar has enabled multibillion-dollar gains for many firms, as well as advancing the thought leadership in Marketing for the academic world.[7]

Teaching and mentoring

Kumar has conceptualized, designed, and taught several courses for Bachelors, Masters, Doctoral, and Executive MBA academic programs worldwide. The courses include New products management, Marketing models, Database marketing, Customer relationship management, Marketing intelligence, Marketing Strategy and Brand Management.[8][9]

Honors

In 2012, Kumar was chosen as a Legend in the field of Marketing and had all of his works compiled and featured in the Legends in Marketing series. The "Legends in Marketing" series was created to ensure that the next generation of academics can access the work of the discipline’s preeminent scholars and to preserve their publications for posterity. Kumar has been listed in Who’s Who Worldwide, and Who’s Who Among Global Business Leaders for his quality work, thought-leadership and achievements in the field of Marketing. He currently holds 12 Lifetime Achievement awards, including the Chang Jiang Scholar Award from the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and the Li Ka Shing Foundation. Most recently, Kumar was granted the AMS/CUTCO-Vector Marketing Distinguished Marketing Educator Award from the Academy of Marketing Science for his outstanding career achievements.
