V05 is an American nu-disco group from Madison, Wisconsin.

Sometimes referred to as “Madison's ambassadors of disco, glitter and platform shoes”[1] or “Madison’s ambassadors of love”, V05 plays concerts featuring many disco and funk cover songs as well as their quirky originals from their album “Dance Originality”.[2][3] They are often dressed in outlandish costumes and are known for long dance parties filled with songs from the 70's from bands like the Bee Gees, ABBA, The Jackson 5, Sly and the Family Stone and songs like “Fire” by the Ohio Players, Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive,” Kool & the Gang’s “Celebration,” or Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky”[4]

History

The first configuration of the band came together in 2005. Members Andrew Rohn (vocals, keyboard), Drew Szabo (bass) and Gail Campbell (drums) were the backing band for Cherry Pop Burlesque, which Cat Capellaro (vocals, trumpet) and John Feith (guitar, vocals) were also involved with.[4][5] Other members include Jim Yockey (percussion, vocals), Marcy Weiland (vocals, keytar), Steve Tyska (trumpet, vocals) and Kelly Maxwell (vocals).[6]

In 2008, V05 recorded four songs at DNA Studios, two originals (“Wisconsin Rap” and “I Want to be a Woman”) and two covers (“Stayin Alive” and “Wonder Woman”). They went on to win the Madison Area Music Award’s Best Cover Band prize that year. They also won the Isthmus Reader’s Poll “Best Rock Band” award in 2012.[3]

During the 2010 US Senate election, a video of V05 playing “Wonder Woman” along with candidate Tammy Baldwin dancing became a hot media topic after a Tommy Thompson employee Brian Nemoir questioned Baldwin’s “heartland values” for dancing along at a gay rights parade.[7][8] Baldwin won the election after Tommy Thompson was forced to apologize for his aides’ “gay-baiting.”[9]

In 2010, V05 released an EP titled “Disco Your Ass Off”.[10]

In 2012, the song “Cheddar Revolution” was included in the “Cheddar Revolution: Songs of Uprising” CD compilation released during Wisconsin governor Scott Walker’s recall election.[11]

V05 is known for playing many benefit concerts, political events and community-focused shows, including Camp Hero, Dance Dances, Viroqua’s Holiday Faire and Laborfest.[3][12][13]

In 2014, V05 workshopped new original songs and recorded them at Subfloral Studio over the next 8 months.[14] The album titled “Dance Originality” was released on October 24, 2015 to a sold out crowd at High Noon Saloon.[15] The album was engineered and produced by John Feith.[4] Over $10,000 was raised through Kickstarter to fund the project and music videos.[16] In 2015 the album ″Dance Originality″ gained radio airplay “from Eureka to Eau Claire” and a music video for the single “Dance Originality” by Chris Arcella won a VOTD.TV award.[17][18] Reviewers wrote that:

“ ″Dance Originality″ is the steak sauce of music; It makes every form of human motion better by pumping it full of positive emotion. The nine fresh songs and EDM-laced remix draw from a well rounded group of influences, including jazz, Latin, and funk, in addition to their disco home ground.[19] ”

The “Dance Originality” video was listed "Best Music Videos of October 2015" by The Monitors.[20] On November 20, 2015, VO5's music video "Dance Originality" won MTVu's "The Freshmen" competition and went on full TV rotation.[21]

On January, 2016, the video for "The Disco Haiku" was released. Milk Crater wrote:

“ "It is a rare thing that a band’s heart and soul shines so brightly through all aspects of their creative output. Shamelessly embracing the lighter side of life with a formula that is equal parts disco, dancing and bizarre, V05 have struck gold." [22] ”

And in March, 2016, the video for "We're Getting Older" was released.[23]

Band Philosophies

Kelly Maxwell sums up the band's philosophy as:

“ Dance, dance, dance! There is such a sense of euphoric togetherness that can happen on a crowded dance floor. Dancing and surrendering yourself to the music can provide a clarity and energy that’s hard to find elsewhere in daily life. We’ve all experienced that sweaty, breathless joy and all we want to do is spread that feeling all over this town like sweet marmalade or cream cheese or some other delicious spreadable substance.[24] ”

Catherine Capellaro states the band’s mission as:

“ V05 represents the hopes and aspirations of all Americans. We believe that dancing should be an essential part of everyone's revolution and that when we're in charge, mandatory wig policies will be strictly enforced. We believe in peace and justice and the American way, especially if it involves platform heels and lots of glitter. Our repertoire includes everything from Sly and the Family Stone to Nelly”[5] ”

Andrew Rohn describes V05’s style by stating:

“ Disco is the perfect anti-cool music that’s actually cool. We embrace the cheesiness, the flamboyance, and the happy energy of disco. These songs are masterpieces of pop arrangement - the vocal harmonies, the string and horn riffs, the classic bass lines - I love digging into this music and figuring out how they made the magic. Disco also represents a melding of black and white culture, gay and straight - it’s ‘coming together’ music.”[6] ”

The Rolling Disco Balls proclaim that:

“ It is rare to see somebody not dancing at a V05 show.”[25] ”

John Feith says, the band:

“ simply aims to make people dance.[24] ”

Eric Cullen writes in the State Times that:

“ V05 borrows from their idols freely — a bass line here, chord progression there — to make an album that, compositionally speaking, fully belongs in the present day music environment. With electronic dance music having its moment and hip-hop being a cultural mainstay at this point, there’s an irony in drawing analog influences that could practically be confused for digital sampling.[19] ”
