Van Renesse is an old Dutch aristocratic family that stems from the town of Renesse in Zeeland.
History
There is some debate regarding the origin of the family; some historians claim that they are the Renesse family was a branch of the German Sayn dynasty. The family played an important role as lords and guardians of the Castle of Moermond in Zeeland, the Netherlands. The oldest members of the van Renesse family appeared in the 13th century. In the course of Dutch history, the family played a prominent role. The Walloon branch van Renesse van Elderen and a German branch von Renesse survived until modern times.

The Renesse coat of arms is depicted in the medieval Gelre Armorial (folio 84r).[1]
