Dr. Varanasi Ramamurthy known also as Renu was a writer, translator, educator from Andhra Pradesh, India [1][2][3][4][5]

Biography

Dr. Varanasi Ramamurthy was born in 1916 in the village of Valluru, Prakasam District, Andhra Pradesh to Brahmin parents Smt. Subbamma and Sri Subbaiah. He married Lakshmi Arundhati in 1937.

He had great passion to go to Kasi for studies but that didn't happen soon. Only after the completion of his high schooling from Bapatla, Guntur, he managed to go there for further studies. He funded his studies mostly through scholarships. He did his Master’s in Arts (MA) in Hindi from Banaras Hindu Vishwavidyalaya (1952). He was awarded doctorate degree in Hindi Literature by the University of Rohilkhand, Bareilly in 1977.[1]

He was a great admirer and follower of Gandhiji, the father of nation. He even took part in freedom struggle and was jailed for 15 days. Throughout his life, he wore only khadi clothes.

He died on February 19, 1995.

Career

He began his career as a school teacher in 1939, served for one year and then joined as a lecturer in Hindu College, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. He worked as a lecturer for 15 years (1940-1955) and then joined All India Radio as a Program Producer for Akashvani, Hyderabad (1955–78).[5] He also served Member Experts Committee, Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanams from 1984–86 and Shri Virupaksha Vidyaranya Mahapeetham (as religious advisor) Hampi Bellary District, Karnataka.

Publications

Ramamurthy wrote various books in Hindi, translated works of many writers from Telugu to Hindi.[4] Some of the selected books he worked on include the following:

All India Radio

During his role as a Program Producer for All India Radio (AIR) in Hyderabad, he produced many National Programs. He worked for AIR from 1955 to 1978.[5]

Centenary

On 15th April 2016, Dr. Renu's centenary was celebrated at Hyderabad by his family and friends. Dr. C. Narayana Reddy, Sri. Yella Venkateswara Rao and Prof. Alok Pandey were the chief guests. Dr. Renu's contribution to Hindi Literature and his literary contribution towards national integration were highlighted by the speakers. Participants shared their experiences with Dr. Renu. A souvenir was released on this occasion.
