Vartan Malakian (Armenian: Վարդան Մալաքյան, born February 14, 1947) is an artist and painter. He is the father of Daron Malakian, guitarist co-founder of System of a Down and Scars on Broadway. He was born on February 14, 1947 in Mosul, Iraq.

Biography

From the age of 7 he discovered his passion for painting. At eighteen he held his first exhibition at the Embassy of Czechoslovakia. In 1975 he emigrated to the United States, due to the regime then led by Saddam Hussein; he settled in Hollywood, California. In 1981 he taught dance at a school in Glendale. In 1993 he opened the art gallery Arka. There he sold more than 100 of his artistic creations. He currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife Zepur Malakian.[1]

Vartan Malakian contributed artistic designs to the albums Mezmerize and Hypnotize by System of a Down. He also did some artwork on his son's Ibanez Iceman.
