The Leonardo Bridge Project headed by Norwegian painter and artist Vebjørn Sand is one of several installations that Sand is known for in Norway.

It’s a smaller-scale version of a 240 m span that Leonardo da Vinci proposed in 1502 as part of a civil engineering project for Sultan Bayezid II of Constantinople (today’s Istanbul). Leonardo is said to have been inspired by the then newly built bridge "Ponte degli Alidosi" over Santerno at Castel del Rio near Bologna. The bridge serves as a pedestrian crossing over European route E18 in Ås, Norway. It was produced by The Leonardo Bridge Project.[1]

The project hopes to apply the design to build practical footbridges around the world using local materials and local artisans as a global public art project. Plans include a bridge over the Golden Horn in Istanbul, as Leonardo had proposed. The Wall Street Journal referred to the project as a "...logo for the nations." (WSJ, Nov. 5-6, 2005)
