Vershini and Kausalya were daughters of Kaushal king. Vershini was married to Rompad, the king of Angadesh (present day Bhagalpur, Bihar).[2] . And Kausalya to Dasharatha, the king of Ayodhya. Rompad was a good friend of Maharaja Dasharatha as both of them were educated at the ashram of sage Vasistha. Vershini had no child even after being married for many years. One day, they were in Ayodhya and jokingly asked Dashratha for a first child of Kausalya. Dasaratha said it would be so. Shanta was born and she was adopted by Vershini and Rompad.
