Vijapur is a city and a municipality in Mehsana district in the Indian state of Gujarat.It is one of fastest developing city of gujarat.It is famous for cotton and tobacco.There is also centre for excellence research for wheat one of its kind in gujarat.The famous maheshwar temple of mahadev is also located nearby.

Geography

Vijapur is located at 23°34′N 72°45′E / 23.57°N 72.75°E / 23.57; 72.75.[2] It has an average elevation of 116 metres (380 feet). It is around 5 km away from the Sabarmati river which is one of the longest river in Gujarat.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[3] Vijapur had a population of 25558. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Vijapur has an average literacy rate of 68%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 75%, and female literacy is 60%. In Vijapur, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Temples

Vijapur Jain temple complex

Vijapur is a birthplace of Jain monk Buddhisagar Suri- he was born in near by Manipura Village. Buddhisagar Suri was Patel by birth, and got enlightenment at a early age. He established Mahudi Jain temple of Ghantakarna Mahavir. He lived in Vijapur and died in samvat 1981(1925 A.D). He was cremated in Vijapur after his death. His samadhi is located behind he government guest home at vijapur. A Jain temple and a shrine dedicated to him was established later.

The ancient temple of maheshwer mahadev and the adjoning step-well are worth seeing. There is also a temple of vidhyavasani mata.

There are nine other Jain temples and five mosques in Viajpur.
