Vijayalakshmi Ravindranath (born 18 October 1953) is an Indian neuroscientist, currently Professor and Chairperson of the Centre for Neuroscience, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. She was formerly the Founder Director of the National Brain Research Centre, Gurgaon. Her main area of interest is the study of brain related disorders including neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.[1][2]
Education and career
Ravindranath earned her B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from Andhra University and received her Ph.D. (Biochemistry) in 1981 from Mysore University and worked at the National Cancer Institute, USA as a Postdoctoral Fellow. She joined the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore, where she researched the metabolizing capacity of the human brain, focussing especially on psychoactive drugs and environmental toxins.
Awards and recognitions
Ravindranath, an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences,[3] is the recipient of several awards like the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Medical Sciences in 1996,[4] the KP Bhargava Medal of Indian National Science Academy and the Om Prakash Bhasin Award for Science & Technology in 2001. She received the Padma Shri Award in 2010.[5]
